OLYMPIA – Looking to book that post-vax summer vacay? So, it seems, is everyone else.

As more people become vaccinated and more places begin reopening, the summer travel surge is upon us.

On Friday more than 2 million people traveled through Transportation Security Administration checkpoints for the first time since March 7, 2020, according to agency numbers. It’s still less than the almost 2.7 million who traveled on the same day in 2019, but significantly more than the 544,000 people who traveled in 2020. More than 2 million people flew on Sunday .

US-Canada Border: Justin Trudeau Urged to Drop Ambiguity, Salvage Summer Travel

Tourism businesses pushed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to relax stringent Canadian border rules in time to salvage the summer travel season, calling for a nationwide plan to reopen the country as the Covid-19 pandemic eases.

The Tourism Industry Association of Canada, the National Airlines Council of Canada and other business groups lambasted the government’s lack of clarity over future travel rules, even as vaccination rates climb rapidly. They also asked for a vaccine certification process and harmonized rules between provinces, which have at times made entry even more restrictive.

CDC Travel Guidelines: What You Need to Know

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidance for fully vaccinated Americans in April, saying that traveling both domestically and internationally was low risk.

The long-awaited recommendations were issued by federal health officials after a series of studies found that vaccines administered in the United States were robustly effective in preventing infections in real-life conditions.

One is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, or two weeks after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna shots.
